This Week I Learnt: Excel

Yeah that complicated looking app that only boring office worker’s seem to use.

On a real one though, I feel like Excel is one of the most underrated skills. People seem to avoid learning it, because the uses are broad that people seem unsure what it’s actually for. As if that isn’t bad enough, the program seems to have the most unappealing and ugly interfaces ever, deterring teenagers even more. We know it’s useful though, we just don’t know how.

Sooo what is Excel actually used for?

Put simply, Excel is a spreadsheet program with massive potential for use due to it’s capability to use a massive dictionary of formulae, allowing it to be used to organise data, create charts, analyse data, make choices and calculations and much much more.

This variety of uses is the reason why pretty much all groups of people, from schools, to small and large businesses love this software, it’s versatile and makes administrative tasks, such as calculating hours and pay, much easier by automating them. Just punch in a few formulae, and you’ll find yourself with a beautiful spreadsheet like this.

It is a skill worth learning. It only takes a few videos (I used a one hour course by freecodecamp), and you will need to use the app sooner or later, regardless of whatever field you go into, let it be sciences, commerce or art.
